LOCAL DENTIST USING LASER FOR NEW ROOT CANAL
TREATMENT

Beach,Florida has acquired a Lares PowerLase® AT Dental Laser, which can treat cavities, gum
disease, and a variety of other dental problems, usually without the need for anesthesia. Dr.
Shiffman has received extensive training and certification in its use and has completed
additional training in Photon Induced Photoacoustic Streaming™ (PIPS™), a revolutionary
new method for preparing root canals.

Lasers have been used safely and successfully in dentistry for many years, but Dr. Shiffman is
one of the first dentists in the area to be trained in the PIPS procedure, which has several
advantages over traditional root canal treatments. It is less invasive, preserves more tooth, and
reduces the amount of time patients spend in the dental chair. It also minimizes the risk of reinfection.
“No one looks forward to a root canal,” admits Dr. Shiffman, “but our patients are
surprised to find that the procedure is no longer a painful ordeal.”

Lasers are also useful in the treatment of gum disease. More than half of adults have some
degree of gum disease, which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. According to Dr.
Shiffman, using the PowerLase AT laser, gum disease can be treated virtually painlessly and in
a way that promotes healing. “With the laser treatment there is no scalpel or sutures, less
discomfort afterward, and patients usually return to their daily routine with little disruption.”

The PowerLase laser can also be used to prepare cavities for filling. According to Dr.
Shiffman, the PowerLase AT laser doesn’t cause vibration like a dental drill, and most patients
don’t require anesthesia. “Patients love it—no injections, no annoying whining sound, and no
numbness afterward,” says Dr. Shiffman. Although the laser does not replace the drill in every
case, for most patients it provides painless dentistry.
