What is a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are tiny little posts that are surgically put into the jawbone. The posts act like a root for the artificial teeth that are put in. The teeth look, feel, and work like natural teeth do. People that have dental implants have the ability to eat what they want using the functionality of the implanted teeth and can smile with confidence, knowing the teeth look natural. Dental implants also help with keeping a person’s facial structure. When someone loses a tooth the bone within the jaw can begin to deteriorate over time, but dental implants help keep the bone structure.
Consultation with Implant Dentist

The Procedure if Implants
For the majority of patients, dental implants will be completed in two phases. The first phase will be a surgical procedure to put the dental implants into the jawbone. After the implants have been inserted, the jawbone often needs time to bond with them.
The healing time after the procedure is different for each patient but, three to six months will be given for the implants to bond to the jawbone securing them. During this time, the patient will need to be on a diet of softer foods and can wear temporary teeth.
Once the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase will begin. The implants will be uncovered from the gums and a healing collar will be placed. Another two weeks will be given for healing, then an impression will be taken in order for your new teeth to be made. Once the teeth are done, attachments will be connected to the implants and the new teeth will be placed on the attachments. What is the Difference in the Available Prosthesis?
If one tooth is missing, a single prosthesis, often called a crown, will be used. There will be a single dental implant used for each individual tooth. When two or more teeth are missing, a partial prosthesis, often called a bridge, will be used. This will replace two or more teeth in a row and often two or three dental implants will be used, depending on the number of teeth it is replacing. If a patient is looking to have all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw replaced, then a complete dental prosthesis, often called a fixed bridge, will be used. The number of implants used in this case will depend on whether the complete prosthesis will be removable or fixed. A removable prosthesis allows the patient to remove it, and the fixed prosthesis can only be removed by a professional.
